A Complete Guide to Used Outdoor Gear Stores in the U.S.

Used gear is the best gear!

It's better for the environment (also as for you wallet!)

I have a pretty long history with outdoor gear austerity and assignment stores.  I used to work in one (encounter Alaska's The Hoarding Marmot beneath). I worked at the Marmot (every bit nosotros all fondly chosen it) for two years while living in Alaska.  It's the longest chore I've always kept and that should say something.

Aside from the fact that the Marmot became like family, it helped cultivate a deep dear for pre-loved clothing and the idea of gear recycling.  I loved the idea that everything had a story AND wasn't drawing precious resources to create new things we already accept enough of. Pretty soon, I minimized my wardrobe and filled information technology with advisedly selected pieces from the Marmot, all of which I love and cherish.

Taking the lessons I learned while working there when I moved into the van, I challenged myself to #NeverBuyNew.  With a few exceptions (similar underwear and shoes), I do non buy new clothes. I notice them used instead, whether information technology be in thrift stores, thrifting apps similar Poshmark, used outdoor gear websites (like Patagonia Worn Wear and REI Used Gear), and of grade, outdoor specific austerity stores.

Unfortunately, they are non actually that many places relatively speaking at least) cashing in on this wonderful market niche. Those that do exist can sometimes nosotros difficult to track downwardly. I oft detect myself asking of a location, where to buy used outdoor gear? Google pretty much autofills 2nd mitt store near me outdoor gear the second I type an "S".

I decided to finally tackle the problem and create a resource not just for myself just for others: the first of its kind equally I am incredibly thrilled to say.  This listing contains all of the used outdoor gear austerity and consignment stores in the U.South. as of early on 2020. In the navigation bill of fare below, click on the country you lot live in and it'll take you down the page right to all the stores there.  I was stoked to see all but two states had at least i used gear shop.

While I'm pretty proud of how complete this list is, the research for this was a beast.  I'1000 certain I missed a few here and there. If y'all know of any used gear retailers that I missed, please let me know and I'll happily add together them to the listing.

Let'southward all make the 2020s the decade we start reusing what we have earlier buying things that don't need to exist!  Where or not you want to get as extreme as me and #NeverBuyNew or but desire a rad retro Patagonia Snap-T from the 90s, this list can help you find astonishing things that deserve to be given a 2d risk at life.

THINGS TO KNOW Almost OUTDOOR GEAR CONSIGNMENT

One quick annotation earlier the list: You'll observe I define for each shop how these stores get their used gear.  Most of the fourth dimension, it comes from folks similar you lot looking to trade their sometime stuff in for a little greenbacks to buy something new (or old). There are two principal methods these stores pay clients for gear:

  • Outright: The store buys an item direct from you, paying you with either cash, a check, or store credit right so and there.

  • Consignment: This ways you don't get money up front.  You get money once the item sells, at which point you lot'll receive a percentage of what it sells for (divers up front end by your contract).

In that location are pros and cons to both.  Outright payment has the advantage that you don't demand to wait for the item to sell to receive bounty for it. However, you generally receive a lower percentage of the expected sale toll (around xxx%) that if you consign (where you receive up of 50% of the sale price).
